Wednesday, January 13th, 2010
Friendly Plastic is gaining popularity all over the world! Check out this recent blog post from SueC who lives in Spain with her husband, children, grandchildren and a couple of furry friends.

Had good fun yesterday trying out the friendly plastic for classes later this week and next.
The atc on the left is the new one I made and the one on the right is the one you have seen before.

Thought this looked like some exotic flower...

...but then again it could be Christmas trees....

These are Inga's pieces...

Sue's work is a mix of her favorite proucts to use and we are glad she chose Friendly Plastic as one of them. Check out more of Sues work on her blog at: http://desiretoinspire-suec.blogspot.com

New Artist Feature – Dirty Paw Designs by Cat

Friday, January 8th, 2010
Cat emailed today to share some of her recent designs made from Friendly Plastic. She is a veteran polymer clay artist, but thru the inspiration from all of you on the blog, she decided to "try" Friendly Plastic.

Dirty Paw Designs by Cat offers one of a kind - completely unique pieces of art. Her motto is: "Art washes away from the soul the dust of every day life" -- Picasso

She credits her mother Kathy for encouraging her to create at a very young age.

I really enjoyed the way she combines friendly plastic with the polymer clay faces.

So....if you're an avid polymer clay artist...why not be like Cat and give Friendly Plastic a try too? We're not asking you to give up polymer clay, just add a little Friendly Plastic to it!

Meet Melani Meeker – A New Friendly Plastic Artist

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

A couple of days ago we featured artist Melani Meeker. A new "Friendly Plastic" Artist. I met Melani on Facebook and asked her for a bio and a little bit about her. I also featured her on the blog because I just couldn't wait to share her work with our readers. Melani answered my call for a "little more about her" and below I share her email and her thoughts about friendly plastic:

Hello Linda,

I am a self professed craftaholic who recently found some old strips of friendly plastic on my shelf (the kind thats so old it cracks when you try to bend it). I glanced over and spotted my embossing gun and thought....."hmmmmm, I wonder if...." and sure enough, it melted and started looking really neat.

I then ran to my computer and did a search for "friendly plastic projects" and came across friendlyplastic.blogspot.com and now I cant seem to get out of my craft room. I spent the first 48 hours in my pajamas not even moving from my table with your blog on one side and my heat gun/friendly plastic on the other. I then decided it was time to invest in more colors.....MANY more colors!

I LOVE your tutorials and the inspiration you provide! I had my mom sit down and watch them all and bought her a bunch of plastic for Christmas.....she's hooked too!

Unfortunately my work (job) interferes with my plastic time, but on my days off, my husband knows where to find me......with the dog on one side, cat on the other, and a heat gun/friendly plastic/your blog in front of me. I took some of my creations to work with me (earrings and pendants) and they disappeared which made me even MORE addicted.

The possibilities are endless and I cant wait to see what else pops up on your blog. I've also been a fan of Suze Miller for years and her work with the pellets......and Pinderella on Etsy.....and Jana Ewy (WOW!).....the list goes on!

Thank you so much for the inspiration and again, I feel honored to even be mentioned in the presence of so many of my "heroes"! Melani
Thanks so much for sharing your work with us Melani! I love Melanie's excitment and Welcome her to the world of fellow Friendly Plastic Addicts!

More Viewer Mail! A Friendly Plastic shout out to Molly Fischer

Monday, December 28th, 2009
I love checking my email everyday to find viewer email! Really...it makes my day! So today's SHOUT OUT goes to Molly Fischer.

I'd like to share the email that I received yesterday from her- she writes:

Hi Linda:

I am a newbie at friendly plastic and I've been trying to create jewelry.

Attached is an earring and necklace set that I made for a co-worker for Christmas. I check the blog everyday for any and all inspiration and instruction. I am a web learner. Because of my husband's work I've had to leave my create friends in Reno, NV and Fremont, CA (stamping groups) so I am stuck here in Milford MASS. - not much in the way of creative groups near by.

Thank you so much for your web site and the Friendly Plastic Blog - my salvation to creative road blocks and great inspiration and education.

Best to you in the New year

Molly J Fischer

Molly, thank you sooooo much for sharing your work! We're so glad that you were willing to try Friendly Plastic too!

Let's all show Molly that she's not alone and email her what a great job she did - just click on her name above! And if you're an FP Artist living MA...well...I think you've found a creative friend nearby! Missy...maybe your husbands next job can bring you to Missouri?

Not your Usual Friendly Plastic by Artist Phyll Beach

Friday, December 25th, 2009
I sent out a call for Friendly Plastic submissions and WOW!!! Look what I got in my email box today from Phyll Beach!

Linda,

This multi media shallow shadow box is 8 x 10
inches before it went into it's antique frame. I created it last
month, the sea turtle (other than the center agate) is FP, in fact it
was my very first effort with FP. I am absolutely sure I will be using it a lot
in the future in many wildly varied pieces. Much of the rest of this piece
is melted Tyvek. Thanks for your blog, I read it every day but took
several months before I ordered a slew of the stuff and decided to try it.

This piece was for a secret winter swap. The challenge was to
incorporate the likes of the person for whom you were to make a gift. My person
liked the colors violet and blue, she liked fantasy, preferred a combination of
old and new in one piece, loved anything from nature, and her most
favorite thing is sea turtles. So though not my usual style at all, it was
fun to make. Probably because it was NOT my style!

I spent today with my teenage grandchildren making FP ladies
with curled wire limbs inspired by the work of an artist you featured a few days
ago. I'm sure their mother will love their creations which she will get for
Christmas. Thanks for inspiring me to try this.

Im sure their mother will love and cherish this gift for years to come! Handmade gifts are PRICELESS!

Warm thoughts on a COLD DAY! Friendly Plastic by Pinderella

Thursday, December 24th, 2009
This is a photo that I took a few weeks back while Mariah and I cruised the Mexican Riveria aboard Holland America's Ms. Oosterdam along with our family. While it was only 23 degree's at home....in Mexico it was a WARM 82! This picture was taken in Cabo San Lucas where the Pacific ocean meets the Sea of Cortez! It's simply beautiful and inspiring!

While I was "surfing the web" I went thru my ever growing list of favorite plastic artists and sites. Among them is PINDERELLA's etsy shop. The photo below took me back to this picture of Mexico....a welcome thought on such a cold snowy day like today.

Pinderella's shop offers whimsical jewelry to fit almost any theme. If you are need of something special for someone special....take a trip to her shop! www.pinderella.etsy.com

Adventures in Friendly Plastic with Melissa J. Lee

Thursday, November 5th, 2009
Melissa has been making beads and designing jewelry since 2007 .

She is an award winning artist taking second place in the "Necklace" category of the Bead Arts Awards, 1st place in the "Metal Clay" category and 2nd place in the "Beyond Glass" category of the British bead awards this year!! CONGRATULATIONS MELISSA!

Now Melissa has taken an adventure in Friendly Plastic and she shares her story:

So, I finally had a chance to sit down with my stash of Friendly Plastic, courtesy of the good folks at Amaco. As I mentioned earlier, although Friendly Plastic has been around for years, I'd never used the product. Playing with all of those mouth-wateringly bold colors was really appealing to me. Amaco offers significant product support for Friendly Plastic on their website, including a number of sample projects (of which my favorite is this one).

One thing I will say, having spent several hours with the product - it did take me a little practice to use it, even to create the simple graphic pendants I made for this post. Friendly Plastic becomes moldable when heated, but the melt point is low enough that it's easy for a neophyte like me to shoot past the target range and end up with a too-gooey substance. I think this is where the choice of heat source becomes crucial. I used my craft toaster oven, and I found it a real handicap not to be able to see how pliable the material was becoming in the heat without taking my non-stick sheet out of the oven every five seconds. I think an electric griddle (the recommended method for heating up Friendly Plastic) or a heat gun would be definitely preferable.

However, Friendly Plastic takes cutters beautifully, and it's a much more forgiving method of using the product with the toaster oven. Even if the plastic is quite soft, it will still take a cutter well (as long as you are careful to wait until the plastic cools to lift the cut-out from the non-stick sheet to avoid distortion). Given this, and - well, frankly - because the bright colors of plastic reminded me of superhero costumes, I decided to focus on creating some bold, colorful pendants with the material.

Because Friendly Plastic will bond to itself when heated, it is relatively easy to create nice inlay designs with the material. I wanted as little distortion as possible in my designs, so I did not completely inlay each of the pieces in these pendants. The UV resin I used to seal them - Lisa Pavelka's Magic-Glos - domed over the designs (with one exception, above, and I liked the paper-mache effect it gave the piece, so I did not apply a second coat), so the raised surface of the pendant really didn't affect the finished product.

My product samples are all metallic sticks (the material is also available in pellet form), but they are metallic only on one side. When I wanted a more matte-looking surface, I simply flipped them over (the blue moon, above, is an example of using the reverse side of a stick). I also discovered that, when I use the sticks in this way, and use cut-out pieces as inlay, the edges curl up just enough as it softens to create an interesting metallic border around the cut-out piece.

To finish the two pendants, I used bails from my stash that were provided to me earlier, courtesy of Rings & Things. I simply attached plastic button shanks to the other two. (By the way, in case you're wondering - it was quite easy to punch stringing holes in the Friendly Plastic, but I discovered after several aborted attempts that I could not cleanly drill through the Magic-Glos the way I would with other types of resin.) I think the Friendly Plastic colors look good strung with brightly colored lucite and resin beads. I also think these simple designs would make excellent, funky rings - just attach to ring blanks, and they're good to go!

Thank you to
Amaco for giving me the opportunity to play with this fascinating product!
