Friendly Plastic goes on the road to the Creative Connection Event

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

It was a great honor to be representing Amaco and Friendly Plastic this weekend at The Creative Connection event held in Minneapolis, MN.  Here's a little night time view from the 18th floor of the Hyatt Hotel seated in downtown Minneapolis.

Somehow you just know it is going to be an awesome day when you're greeted at the breakfast table by creative "new" friends and a a delicious yogurt parfait.

The event was host to 400 creative women from indie etsy artists, mommy bloggers, publishers, designers, TV show producers and so on representing 46 states and Canada. These women were just "itchin" to absorb all they could to take their businesses and their dreams to the next level and let me tell you...the talent in the HandMade Marketplace was beyond my wildest dreams.

I used this opportunity to connect and meet as many new creative friends as possible and of course to spread the word of just how awesome Friendly Plastic is.   Those who had heard of Friendly Plastic were so excited that this "retro" product is on a comeback mission and those who didn't....okay the way "younger" crowd....we're excited to hear about a medium they had never heard of before.

They had lots of opportunity to create with Friendly Plastic at the special Pajama Party Event which we held LIVE from the hotel. Over a hundred attended this event.

My table is excited and ready to go!!! Look at all those happy faces!

Once they learned how you can cut and stack and melt and heat and bond and marble and wrap Friendly Plastic....you couldn't pull them away!
One gal got so carried away...she made 4 pieces in about a half an hour...and she was still sitting there making more.  She just kept saying.."I LOVE THIS STUFF....I LOVE THIS STUFF!"

Everyone left the event with huge smiles on their faces and a goodie bag full of Amaco products to take home with them....now the next challenge....

How in the world to get it all home?!?!?!!?!?

Simple Photography Tips for Friendly Plastic

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010
By now, you've probably been reading our daily posts and have created a mountain of Friendly Plastic projects - Right????  I sure hope so!!   Now it's time to share them with the rest of the world.  But how do you photograph them so that they will stand out in the photo?

Here are a few of my favorite tips if you are just beginning:

  • Select a camera that will do nice close up (macro) shots.  This is very important.

  • Hold the camera steady - if you can't, consider using a tripod and the timer button on the camera

  • Use a simple background.  A light grey, black or light blue works well.  As an option you could use a pretty piece of 12 x 12 scrapbook paper with a gentle pattern.  Stay away from pure white as this tends to confuse the camera and sends the white balance in a tizzy.

  • Use natural lighting if at all possible.  Shoot by a window, but not in direct sunlight.  You can also take your project outside and choose a nice shady spot.  This helps avoid shadows.  Lighting is so important - so give attention to this particular tip!
  •
  • For nice detail shoot the photo in as high of resolution that your camera will allow.  Mine is 8mp.  The higher the megapixel the more detail in your photo when enlarged.
  • Here's an important one.....if emailing your photo to your Flickr, Photobucket, Facebook or to me to share, please resize the photo down to an "email version".  Most photo editing programs will allow you to resize these photos to send quickly over the internet.  If you are using Photoshop, simply click on FILE then SAVE FOR THE WEB and this will do the trick!!
The photo below is a good example of simple photography.

I photographed this on a patterned piece of scrapbook paper.  While the paper has a light pattern to it, it doesn't detract from the Friendly Plastic pendant.

You can see that the patterned background that I used above would not be a good choice for displaying a variety of beads, such as these beads created by Liz Welch.  She effectively used a lighter grey background to highlight each and every bead.

This is an example of a close up photo.  Liz used a black background to make the individual bead stand out.  The photo is clear.  Just a word of caution, be careful using black backgrounds, since they could come off as greys, blues or purples.

Have fun with the photography and stay tuned tomorrow as I give some more advanced tips!

National Craft Month Tips on Jewelry Making!

Friday, March 12th, 2010
I've posted on Facebook a call out for your favorite jewelry making tips....or ...just a creative tip in general.  I love all the response I've been receiving.  (remember to leave your tip on the blog via a comment or on Facebook and I'll enter you into a drawing to be given away next Friday!)

Here are of some of my favorites:

Cindy C. "When making jewelry for yourself, have something in mind that your going to wear it with. That way you can match or with medias like friendly plastic, polymer clay, etc you can create colors that will coordinate with your outfit. It will give you a great custom look"

Carol C:  "Taking apart something I bought at a charity shop and combining it with my stash to make something new especially using chain maille. There are some wonderful weaves to try."

Melody B:  "I like making various wire pieces up and then come back to them to put them together at a later date. Things always look different from a fresh perspective!

Amy K:  "Beading gives you the flexibility to work to your hearts content, and improvise as you go without losing valuable stock if you mess up :)"

These are all GREAT tips ladies!  Thanks so much for sharing!  Leave your tip too and win a prize!
