Bright Shiny Things in Friendly Plastic by Mylene Hillam

Saturday, April 17th, 2010
Mylene and I are alot alike...we love BLING!  And we are both drawn to bright shiny things.  When I first saw Mylene's post, I really thought it was embossed metal....but it's not!  So read on as Mylene shares her take on "Bright Shiny Things".  She writes:

Just like a magpie, I am drawn to bright shiny things. I like precious jewels, so dazzling that they sparkle in the light. And the reflective shimmer of a CD as you tilt it causing a rainbow to dance around the disk. I like the lustre of shiny satin as it drapes in soft folds, and the crystals of a chandelier as the sunlight dances on them projecting a beautiful spectrum on whatever surface it falls. But I especially like Friendly Plastic with its vibrant, metallic foils so shiny and bright. It is hard not to be drawn to them.

But today I want to share what happens when you alter that shiny, smooth surface by impressing a texture. Doesn't it look great?....... still shiny, but no longer smooth. So you CAN have the best of both worlds - texture and shine all in the one piece.

With a stunning texture like this only a few simple embellishments are needed to create a lovely focal point on this card.
By the way, this texture is from Krafty Lady. Being made of silicone it won't stick to Friendly Plastic so there's no need for a release agent. Just soften the Friendly Plastic using your preferred heating method, place the texture mat on the surface and use a small rolling pin or stamp block to gently press the texture into the Friendly Plastic. Allow it to cool and it will release easily. If you're impatient like me, you can speed up the cooling by plunging it into cold water.

Before signing off today, I just want to give a quick plug to my upcoming Friendly Plastic classes at Stamp Antics on April 24th. In the morning class you'll learn how to create a Fracture and Fusion pendant with Friendly Plastic and resin and in the afternoon, we turn our attention to all your Friendly Plastic scraps when we turn them into fantastic embellishments to use in your papercraft projects. Bookings can be made by phoning Stamp Antics (3393 3022).

Hope you can join me!

Creating Friendly Plastic Addicts One Friend at a Time – by Jen Lowe

Thursday, April 15th, 2010
It's true - that's our mission...creating Friendly Plastic Addicts one friend at a time.  And the best thing about this addiction is it offers no harmful side effects!  Only creative fun and a chance to escape some stress!

I say if Cool2Craft can put out a call for 1 Million people who think it's cool to craft we can do the same!! 1 Million FP addicts huh?

Many of the techniques you see here were inspired by internationally known artist Liz Welch

I thought you would enjoy this post by Jen Lowe

Last time, I posted about teaching 1 person who taught another person.....and how you can grow a craft that way.

This blog is about how one person took what she learned here, and made numerous pendants from that same "class" - she is growing her Friendly Plastic skills by leaps and bounds.

Here's what my good friend Shelly made - all done with Friendly Plastic. We're teaching the world, one friend at a time!!!

Which one do you like best???

Friendly Plastic Frame -Friendly Plastic Tutorial by Lucy Edmondson of True Colors

Friendly Plastic Frame
by Lucy Edmondson
True Colors

This project is surprisingly easy. You will need Silver Friendly Plastic, strong double side tape such as Red Line, a suitable stamp (I have used one of my favourite Harlequin stamps from the Artistic Stamper, Glossy Accents, and Metallic Rub Ons, No 1. The image is from Crafty Individuals Flowers and Butterflies image book.

1. Take a 5 cm square piece of chipboard, mountboard, or strong card, and neatly edge it with narrow Red Line double sided tape (I have left the red backing on so it shows in the photo but remove this now).

2. Cut four narrow strips of silver Friendly Plastic to fit exactly onto the tape and adhere, so that the strips touch each other.

4.    It should look like this now.

5. Holding your heat gun about 15 cms away, on the lower setting if you have one, heat the edges evenly until they soften slightly into each other and there is a crazed appearance evenly across the surface as shown. This will take about 30 seconds or more, depending on the heat of your heat gun. Don’t over-melt and cause it to lose its shape.

6. Ink up the Harlequin Stamp with Versmark and stamp right across the whole frame, and leave to cool before removing.

7. Choose image and adhere to centre of frame.

8. Apply Green rub-on to the frame with your finger:-

9. Add a gem to the butterfly and apply Glossy Accents to centre of frame, to cover image. Leave overnight to dry and keep elbows away!

This is the final frame:-

This is a selection of art moulds made with Friendly Plastic, to whet your appetite for Part 2
